SACRAMENTO (AP) — California will become the first state to make it illegal for teenagers under age 18 to use tanning beds under a bill signed into law by Gov. Jerry Brown.
Sen. Ted Lieu, the bill’s author, says 30 other states have some restrictions but that California would be the first to set the higher age limit.
Currently, using tanning beds is illegal in California for those 14 and under, but those ages 15-17 can tan with their parents’ permission.
Brown announced Sunday that he had signed the bill, SB746, raising the prohibited age.
Lieu, a Democrat from Torrance, says Illinois, New York, Ohio and Rhode Island have considered similar bans but had yet to enact them. Texas is the next highest age limit, banning tanning bed use by teenagers under 16.
